Abstract:
At the beginning of An Outline of European History, Nikolaus Pevsner argues that the difference between architecture and building can be illustrated by the comparison of Lincoln Cathedral with a bicycle shed. According to Pevsner, the cathedral is architecture, the bicycle rack is not. But what if the bicycle rack is architecture? What if ordinary elements of the urban landscape – a sidewalk, a path, a ramp, a dustbin – can become architecture? At Dogma we call confetti an architecture made of ordinary elements such as fences, walls, piers, posts, benches, platforms, pergolas, or even minute elements such as a brick or a tile. Confetti are not spaces but places, not objects but markers, not buildings but what exists in between buildings. The lecture will present a series of projects inspired by the idea of confetti.
Bio:
Martino Tattara is Associate professor at KU Leuven, Faculty of Architecture. Tattara studied at the Università Iuav di Venezia in 2002, obtained a postgraduate Master degree at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam in 2005, and a PhD in Urbanism at the Università Iuav di Venezia in 2008. During the last years, together with Dogma, the architectural practice he has established together with Pier Vittorio Aureli, he has been working on a research by design trajectory that focuses on domestic space and its potential for transformation. Dogma’s projects have been exhibited at various venues including the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2014, the HKW Berlin 2015, the Biennale di Venezia in 2016 and 2021, the Chicago Architectural Biennial in 2017, the Flemish Architectural Institute in Antwerp, the Seoul Architecture Biennale and the Sharjah Architecture Triennale in 2019. The office has recently published Living and Working (The MIT Press 2022), a book that summarizes the office’s work on domestic space. The work of the office has recently been featured by El Croquis (208/2021).
