Dora Papidou

Dora Papidou graduated from the School of Architecture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with honours in 2001. She continued her studies at the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB), Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), completing two (2) Postgraduate Programmes M.Arch: in architectural design in 2003, supported by scholarships from the ETSAB Postgraduate Programme and from the Lilian Voudouris Foundation, and in theory and history of architecture in 2007. She holds a PhD in theory of architectural design at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). Her PhD thesis “Architectural Design and its Space of Inscription” was supervised by prof. Juan-José Lahuerta Alsina, and received an honorary distinction (Excellent Cum Laude); it was shortlisted in the XI Biennale Competition for Doctoral Dissertations in Architecture by Arquia Foundation.

As a Polytechnic University of Catalonia Foundation scholarship grantee, has worked as an architect in the Barcelona Provincial Council Building Maintenance Office. Upon her return to Greece, together with Dimitris Manios, PhD, has established the architectural studio Manios Papidou Architects in 2009. The studio was awarded mainly large-scale, urban design and museum design projects; participations in architectural competitions have been awarded distinctions and prizes. The constructed project “Historical and Folklore Museum of Nikiti”, Greece has been repeatedly distinguished, exhibited and published in Greece and abroad.

Her research work focuses on the relation of writing with architecture, and has been presented and published in national and international conferences. She has participated in research programmes of the Postgraduate Programme “Theory and History of Architecture” at the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB) in the fields of “Art Semiotics” and “Archaeology of Romanticism”, under the supervision of prof. Ferran Lobo, as well as in research programmes at the AUTh. From 2020 to date, she conducts post-doctoral research at the School of Architecture, AUTh. Her current post-doctoral research is entitled “Writing and Architecture: Historical convergences. Architectural Design in the modern meta-alphabetic age” and is supported by the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY).

She has taught at the School of Interior Design ΑΚΤΟ Art & Design, Middlesex University London (2011-2013), at the Hellenic Open University (2011-2012), at the School of Architecture AMC Metropolitan College, UEL University of East London (2014-2017), at the School of Architecture, Democritus University of Thrace (2016-2017) and at the School of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2017-2022); since 2023 she is an Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
