Brief Curriculum Vitae

Vanessa Tsakalidou received her Diploma with honours from the School of Architecture – Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1997, having attended six months at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura Venezia, through the exchange programme Erasmus. In 1998, she completed the Postgraduate Programme M.Arch in architectural design at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, under the supervision of Sir Peter Cook. She holds a PhD in architectural design from the School of Architecture A.U.Th [2006]. Her PhD thesis with title: ‘The synthetic logic of interference in architecture’, supervised by prof. Anastassios M. Kotsiopoulos (grade: excellent), was supported by EU research scholarship ‘Heraclitus’ EPEAEK II.

She is Associate Professor at the School of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, teaching architectural design and theory of architecture. She is Director of the Postgraduate Studies Programme ‘Environmental Architectural and Urban Design’. She is ECTS Coordinator for the Erasmus+ Studies Programme. She has participated in several research programs of AUTh and supervised several international workshops. She was adjunct lecturer at the School of Architecture, at Democrition University of Thrace [2003–2007] and at the School of Architecture of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki [2007-2016].

She was co-author of books ‘Modernism and architectural education’, do_co.mo.mo_,03 (Athens, Futura, 2007) and ‘Memory-Museum City’, (Patras, University of Patras, 2013), Senior Editor of annual review ‘KTIRIO Architecture+Design’ [2007-2011] and guest editor for international reviews ‘Architecture in Greece’ and ‘Design + Art in Greece’.

Ιn 2009 she co-founded the architectural studio 40.22.ARCHITECTS, based in Thessaloniki. Her work –on research, theory and practice- has been presented in 62 international and national conferences and lectures, in 57 exhibitions and published in over 100 publications, greek and international reviews, catalogues, editions and websites [15th international exhibition of architecture LaBiennale di Venezia, Greek Architects_Hellenic Institute of Architecture, 7th Biennale of Young Greek Architects, Panorama of Greek Architecture DOMES 2013, 2014, 2015& 2016, 2017, 4th& 5th Exhibition of Architectural Works, ‘Thessaloniki 1912-2012: The architecture of a 100 years’, 7th Landscape Architecture Exhibition, Belgrade, 8th International Exhibition of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts etc]. It has also received prestigious distinctions and awards in architectural competitions [2 international awards, 1 1st prize, 2 2nd prizes, 1 3rd prize, 2 commendations, 2 international honourable mentions, 3 mentions etc]. Since 2014, she is founding member of interdisciplinary research team ‘Akalyptos SKG’.

She has been a member of several scientific and organizing committees of conferences. Since 2014, she is shortlisted for jury in greek architectural competitions. She was a member of the consulting team for the Municipality of Thessaloniki on ‘Environment and green infrastructure of the city’ [2014-2017] and a member of the Architectural Committee Technical Chamber of Thessaloniki [2018-2020]. She is a member of ΤCA, SADAS and the Hellenic Institute of Architecture. Since 2009, she is the National Selector for Greece for the International Piranesi Award, organized annually by ‘Piran Days of Architecture’ in Slovenia.
