Kalfopoulos Apostolos

Curriculum Vitae:
Apostolos Kalfopoulos (b.1974) is an Architect M.Arch in Advanced Architectural Design (1998), Strathclyde University) a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece since 2000, an Independent Curator and an Art-Critic (member of the International Association of Art Critics since 2008). He is a lecturer at the School of Architecture in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Founder and Director of DYNAMO. His main research and practice interests range from Architectural Design and Visual Arts, to Service and Strategic Design to Exhibition Design, Product and Communication Design. Since 2010 he is a PhD Candidate at the School of Architecture of the University of Thessaly researching on the “change of the paradigm of the Spectator in ‘spaces of constructed visibility’ of the artistic and architectural avant-garde: 1900-1947”.

Since 2012 he is an Appointed Lecturer (elected in 2009) teaching design, art and theory of architecture, applied and visual arts and so far he has supervised 27 diploma projects and theses in the Department of Architectural Design and Visual Arts in the School of Architecture of the Aristotle of University of Thessaloniki. From 2005-2008 he taught design as a Contract Lecturer at the School of Architecture of the University of Thessaly. From 2004-2007 he taught theory and design as a Contract Lecturer at the School of Architecture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. From 1999-2004 he was a teaching assistant at the School of Architecture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He has also taught at the Masters Degree Course of the School of Architecture of the University of Thessaly and is invited to run a course in the Masters Degree Course on Strategic Product Design at the International Hellenic University in 2014 

Since 2012 he is a member of the appointed Academic Committee that designs the new academic curriculum for the School of Architecture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki 

He has also organized and moderated a series of international workshops on architecture, design and art such as (i) 2013, “Artivists for Change - 30 artists, architects, designers from Greece, Germany, Cyprus, Jordan in cooperation with: European Cultural Foundation, Cultural Innovators Network, Goethe Institute”, (ii) 2013, “A.D.U 2020, Higher Education in Architecture, Design and Urbanism, Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseno y Urbanismo, Universidad Privada de Santa Cruz de la Sierra”, (iii) 2006, “Learning From Cities”, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki participation at the 10th Venice Architecture Biennial”. 

He has been invited to give lectures in a series of institutions, museums and universities in Greece on the relation of Art and Architecture. He has organized many conferences such as (i) 2013, “Fast Forward – International Conference on Creative Cities”, organized by Creativity For.Th, Goethe Institut, Κ.Ε.Π.Α (Centre for Entrepreneurial and Cultural Development), the Prefecture of Central Macedonia, the Municipality of Thessaloniki, (ii) 2013,International Conference, Designing Creative Synergies”, organized by the International Hellenic University, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the German Consulate in Greece, the Goethe Institut, The Centre for Entrepreneurial and Cultural Development and Creativity For.Th, (iii) 2005, “Education on Architecture and Visual Arts”, National Conference with the participation of 9 Schools of Architecture and Fine Arts.

Since 2009, as the founder and director of DYNAMO, a non-profit and independent body, that supports original research and contemporary creation by generating knowledge, creativity and innovation he has organized and curated more than 40 projects such as (i) 2012-2013 Creativity For.th – 8 initiatives for the bottom-up and top-bottom empowerment of the Creative Community of Thessaloniki, with the co-operation of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, (ii) 2009-2013 DEMO 1-4  Annual Exhibition and Residency Program of Art and Architecture School Graduates from allover Greece, (iii) 2011-2012, Teenage Angst, Annual Exhibition of teenage creators from allover Greece (15th Biennial of Young Artists From Europe and the Mediterranean Region). 

In 2012, he was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Deputy Mayor for Culture, Education and Tourism for the strategic design of short, medium and long-term policies for the  Development of Fine and Applied Arts for the Municipality of Thessaloniki.

He has independently curated and designed many exhibitions such as (i) 2009, “The Beautiful is just the first of the Terrible” for the State Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki, (ii) 2007, “Other Places” for the 1st Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art – “Heterotopias”. 

He has been a member of juries of national and international architectural and art competitions such as (i) 2012, “Thessaloniki Aghia Sophia Metropolitan Axis Architectural Competition” organized by the Greek Ministry for the Environment and Climatic Change, (ii) 2011, “15th Biennial of Young Creators from Europe and the Mediterranean Region», committee for the selection of Greek participants, (iii) 2011, «ΑnimaSyros 4 – International Animation Festival + Forum”, president of the international jury. 

He has written a series of texts in exhibition catalogues of established and upcoming Greek Artists. He has edited and curated a series of publications and other media such as (i) 2013 “What we share is what we have in Common”, Exhibition catalogue, DYNAMO publications (to be published), (ii) 2013, “DYNAMO Broadcaster”, weekly Radio-program at the Municipal Radio of Thessaloniki with presentations and interviews of young creators from allover Greece, (iii) 2009, “The Beautiful is just the first degree of the Terrible”, Exhibition Catalogue, 194 pages, English-Greek text, State Museum of Contemporary Art,  (iv) 2007, “Architectural Design and Digital Technologies”, 228 pages, Ekremmes Publishers, Athens, Greece, co-edited with S. Vergopoulos (v) 2006, “Architectural Guide of the Aegean - 253 works”, Guest Editor at the catalogue of the Greek Pavilion of the 10th Venice Architecture Biennale.

During 2001-2002 he was a Visiting Scholar at the school of Architecture in Columbia University, New York (Academic Sponsor: Kenneth Frampton)
