Project Objectives:

Urban waterfronts are facing new challenges when dealing with climate change. The effect of climate change is increasing at an unprecedented rhythm which demands adaptation and strategic planning of vulnerable territories. The problem affects the citizens, the environment and the local economy. S.O.S. – Sustainable Open Solutions- for European urban waterfronts is an interdisciplinary project that aims to explore waterfronts in Europe that are facing climate change. The project involves different disciplines to create new strategies for sustainable solutions concerning infrastructure and urban planning in Europe. The project aims to develop new solutions that emerge from the present necessities and projections to the near future. The project relates historic and geographic records of specific waterfronts to construct patterns of development, feed algorithms and integrate the support of artificial intelligence to design future possible scenarios.

Workshop Activities:

Focusing on a location at the SE extremity of Thessaloniki’s waterfront, the workshop brings together academics, public authorities, stakeholders and students of architecture for two weeks of intense discussion, strategic planning and detailed urban design. The workshop focuses on developing open-ended solutions that are inspired by local conditions and can be applicable to the wider problems faced today in the context of European Waterfronts.
