International Restoration Workshop

*Dear Sir/Madam!*

The Transylvania Trust, in charge with the restoration and revitalisation of Banffy castle, Bontida, Romania, is organising since 2001 a training project to address the lack of craftsmen and professionals in the field of historic building conservation. So far more than 1500 participants from 26 countries (Romania, Albania, Australia, Brazil, Belgium, France, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, etc.) participated at our training courses.

This summer we are organising again an *international restoration workshop*, designatedto *undergraduate students* in Architecture, Structural Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Archaeology, History of Art and other related fiels. The workshop can also be attended by *craftsmen* who seek to specialise in the restoration of historic buildings.

During the two weeks of the workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to learn the theoretical principles and methodology of investigation and restoration from qualified lecturers from Romania and abroad, and to participate in the restoration of Bánffy Castle. The emphasis of the training will be on direct “hands-on” learning. At the end of the workshop the participants will receive a certificate of participation.

*The theoretical training*will be organised on the first day of the worksop. The lectures will be translated simultaneously to Romanian, Hungarian and English.

*The practical training*will focus on 4 main areas:

1.Structural interventions in historic buildings: vault restoration and rendering (9 days), mural decorations and specialised techniques (fresco, secco, sgraffito, stucco-2 days),

2. Traditional joinery and furniture restoration.

3. Archaeological research and survey

4. Art history research and survey (1 week duration and to be continued in the rendering and mural decorations workshop)

The trainers are specialised craftsmen in the related field.
